I have been spending my evenings
lately on home improvement projects. My current
project is to completely renovate my bedroom. It is
difficult and messy work but ripping strips of trim
and crushing walls is a pretty incredible way to
relieve stress. I also have to admit that it is nice
to have a task that has a single, simple focus.
As I sat down to write this month's letter, my home improvement
project started me thinking about how I have been empowered to
try to do it myself. A few years ago, I would be getting bids to
do this type of work but because I have become a HGTV and DIY
network junkie these days, I am constantly looking at the
projects in my home in very new ways.
Without the shows, I would have never attempted to do things on
my own. They have empowered me, built my confidence and
given me a new perspective on my own skills. It goes to show how
a compelling story can engage, empower, change our perspective
and can change the world.
It is a "do it yourself" world now. You, too, have that kind of power. You are an expert about camp and you have tools to share that message
with millions. So, in the spirit of IY and our 20/20 vision, I would like to invite each and every one of
you to take on a project that tells the story of camp to a broad
audience. Start a blog, record a podcast, shoot a video for the ACA's YouTube Video
Contest (details below). Get it out there and engage a new
generation in the spirit of camp. CHANGE THE WORLD!

Your Creative Assignment Put your
videography skills to work! Forget storytelling around the
campfire and start storytelling around the video camera. Choose
one or more of the following topics for your YouTube video and
in a 3-minute or less video, tell us the story of how your camp
community . . . .
-
Links kids to nature, providing kids with real,
authentic experiences with nature;
-
Connects kids to authentic relationships that
afford friendships, understanding, and appreciation for one
another and the global community; and/or
-
Gets kids up and moving and learning about their
strengths and lifestyles that advance well-being.
When you are ready, submit your YouTube video to
Peg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association. For complete
